This is both really interesting but also somewhat scary at the same time – just when we thought that AI was factual and impartial this comes up.
Why this is interesting; The fact that a “machine”, on its own, will deliberately lye to gain a reward/advantage in a situation where there is incomplete (and even asymmetric) information available.
Why this is important; This feat goes far beyond poker and will have applications in a wide range of business and social situations, such as; sales negotiations, gaming (first person shooter games), marketing to name a few. It will also be used to help a human detect when an opponent is lying, provided it has access to sufficient information.
It should be noted though that the poker AI only won when playing against one player – it does not yet master a classic multi-player poker game situation.
